St. Augustine Area Information:
St. Augustine is one of the oldest cities in the United States.
The city is located in St. John’s County between Northeast
and Central East Florida. You can easily access St. Augustine from
airports in Daytona, Orlando, and Jacksonville. St. Augustine borders
the ocean and contains 43 miles of beachfront property some designed
for automobile touring and some designed purely for pedestrian enjoyment.
The city’s historic district is famous for its colonial flavor
and its Spanish style architecture.
Castillo De San Marcos (Historic District):
The Castillo De San Marcos is a major landmark within the city
and along with neighboring structures, served as a defense from
enemy armies. To the south lay Fort Matanzas. This original fort
was built in the early 1740’s and contains a masonry watchtower
constructed by Spanish troops to guard against enemy troops coming
from south of the fort. This fort was built as a defense against
enemies of the Spanish that were approaching along the Matanzas
River. To the north, Fort Mose was built to protect the city from
its other vulnerable position. This fort was also built near the
middle 18th century. Together the two forts made the city rather
impenetrable for a significant period of time.
